why do we still use 47's ?
hey ak purists, riddle me this :
The 74 has been out for eons, why do we still even mass-produce 47's ?? ??
I thought the 74 was vastly improved in most measurable ways ? i've talked to plenty of AK owners and they all admit the 5.45 x 39 is superior for almost every occaision.
How much of this is nostalgia ? It seems to me like the original ak's days are past.

The AK47's round the 7.62x39 offers two advantages over the 5.45x39. It has more stopping power and more penetration capabilities. The big thing with the 5.45x39 is that it you can carry more ammunition of it and the round supposedly tumbles.

I think the 47 is still around because people want an affordable yet reliable rifle that can compete with the best.

Since 1974 is "eons"? I have ingrown toenails older than that.
In what way is the 74 superior to the 47? The 5.45 ammo is less powerful than the questionable 5.56. I do not know who you have "talked to", but I do not think they are realible sources.

fair point, but the 5.45 39 has be shown to be more frangible and have tumbling powers, plus the 47 is just too spazmodic and clunky as far as accuracy for me.
I need to be able to point and shoot with relative ease.
i'm not the spray-and-pray action commando type, it pains me to think of wasting ammo, particularily in a shtf situation.

5.45 bullets do not tumble any more than 5.56 bullets do. They can and do yaw or sideslip. That can cause significant damage when it occurs. The problem is it is not consistant. It MAY yaw and it MAY not.
The whole argument falls back to the old "light-fast" and "heavy-slow" controversy handgunners have been arguing since 1935 with the introduction of the .357 Magnum.
The 74 is absolutely useless w/o ammo. How much is available in Argentina? In the US, there are no domestic manufacturers of 5.45 ammo. It is wholly dependant on import. The cheap supply could dry up with a stroke of Oblama's pen. The 7.62X39 is made by all of the big three US ammo companies.
An AK-47 is plenty accurate out to 300 meters. I seriously doubt the 74 is going to stretch that range much if at all.

say that again but use glock for 74, 40 for 5.45 and 1911 for 47 . sounds silly now doesn't it?
