If you can find them, the Yugo Underfolder models are really stoutly built AK-47's. I picked these 2 up a couple of years ago for around $480.00 each, but lately I've heard the Yugo parts kits are drying up, and the prices have gone up accordingly. These actually weigh more than my Polish 1960 Milled Receiver Models.

Get a nice Norinco Mak 90. There the best of all AK reproductions.

The only drawback is they only accept 10 rd. single stack mags, but alot of folks are talking about some milling work for them to take regular AK mags. I don't foresee this being an issue for me personally.

I am not a huge AK fan, but after researching this one, I got pretty stoked. Hope this helps!

I completely Agree with you. hammer forged chrome lined bore. the quality of a Chinese AK. I just picked up 2 for 500 a piece and im in the process of re-fang them to pre-ban.
What state do you live in ?
are you dead set on a under folder?

Get a VZ58 or a VZ2008 CIA build. The VZ58 is roughly $800 but the VZ2008 runs $499. CIA is said to be hit and miss but I have owned one of their Galils and Romanian AKs that were 100% functional.
I've been researching them for for a couple years and have finally pulled the trigger on one. It'll be here this week. They have a great reputation and quite a few guys run them in classes such as the one Larry Vickers instructs.
They are said to be more ergonomic, lighter, and more accurate than the AK47. Their receiver is milled which is nice and they can be had w/ a side folder.
