You really want something that shoots tight and packs a whallop, check out the Saiga in .308. Saiga is made in Russia at Izhmash factory, same place they make the AK-47 and AK-74. In fact, Ellett Bros had a bulletin recently of some Saiga's that came into the country that still had the 3rd hole in the receiver for the full auto, and had to be recalled.

Get a Saiga, convert it to the original PG and forward fire control group, and you have a NEW rifle and NEW barrel to play with. Not something that has been cut up after being used and been put back together again in U.S.

My Saiga after converions:

A group I shot recently with Hodgdon Benchmark powder.

Different day, and different load:

That's some nice grouping for an AK !!!

Hey Vern...you sure you didn't only shoot once with that first group just kidding. heck, I'd be happy with that second group anyday, specially out of an AK.

Good shooting, and nice looking gun Vern.

The .308 Winchester Saiga AK-47 I had that I redone back to the original AK was one heck of a shooter. (since sold) It had a 3 bolt lug and one evening, just before dusk, I put up a Pizza Hut box with a black dot on it (magic marker) out at the 100 yard range and shot 5 factory rounds. I couldn't see from the scope I had where it was hitting.... until I walked up to the target. Sometimes I think it's the nature of .308 to be a lot more accurate than 7.62 Soviet.

And, the AK-47 in .308/ 7.62 NATO that did the above groups and many other hand loaded groups under 0.750" at 100 yards. No longer have it, but it was a good accurate rifle. Barked a bit loud because of the 16" barrel, which the wife and neighborlady complained about, but in a combat situation, that may have been a good thing.

Why are you resurrecting a 5 year old thread?

Guy emailed me questions about an AK and AR and referred to this thread. Thought if he were looking he might as well see some newer pictures.

IMHO, buying any pattern gun is almost like buying a

first car. Until you use one for awhile, you really don't

know first-hand what is good, and what you personally

would prefer as an improvement.

For me, my first AK was also technically my last.

I've gotten similar designs, but different enough that none

of them could be considered AKs.

I went a different route for my first AK. It's a Catamount Fury II semi box Mag fed 12Ga..only issue with it is, unlike the saiga is no drums, only 5 & 10 shot Box mags.......

I'd say a Waffen Werks AK74 is a great one. I don't know about the best for anyone, but it's my favorite AK so far. A buddy of mine got his for $600 (I think)

I remember when this thread was new.

I never cared for the 47's I've fired. But the 74 is a sweet shooter.
