What about an SKS?

Ive been seeing chinese SKS's for really cheap. Im researching ak47s for the future and thought this might be an option. Being as my price range will be about 450 im looking for something relatively inexpensive and reliable. Whats kinds are good and what should I look out for?

The Russian Simonovs are the originals and have the best reputation. They are also the most expensive.

The Chinese Norincos are good rifles. Not fancy, not Mil-surp, but new commercial manufacture for the US market. They work...well.

The Yugo's look cool, but they are actual surplus rifles that may have been abused. I see more problems and hear more complaints about the Yugos. They are the only ones available in decent quanity.

Go Norinco for the best shooter for the buck.

SKS's are a hoot. You need one whether you realize it or not. :D
You can get your AK-47 later when money/situation permits.

SKS over a legal AK anyday.

mags

Do they use only the 5 round mag that comes on it or can it use 30 round mags without modification?

I believe they are normally a standard 10 rd mag, mine is anyway. As I understand things, converting it to take a removeable magazine isn't a big deal. I haven't done much to mine other than put a new stock on it. 10 rds is enough for my use.

Check out this reasonably-priced SKS Bullpup conversion:

I put mine in a Tapco T6 stock (much like their "fusion") and use Tapco 20 round duckbill magazines. I really love this rifle. My usual shooting buddy bought a WASR10 (semi-auto AK clone) about the same time and really enjoys it. We both agree that the SKS is more rifle-like and seems a bit more accurate at a distance. Mine also came with the cool spike bayonet. I paid a bit over $300 for it and some ammo at a local gun show. If you will never use it for hunting and just want a fun plinker, an AK clone might be better for you, as the WASR is a bit lighter weight, but the SKS will probably be more useful long-term.

The only beef i have with the SKS is the difficulty of mounting a scope solidly. I have added some "peep" sights & dumped the scope.

sks's are great

there are so many options when it comes to a SKS I have one set up with a scope and bi-pod with stock mag (Russian)
my Yugo with a mote stock and a 30 round duck mag
and a pretty rare Chinese that takes ak mags but you will not find them for cheap anymore

Guys who install a Tech Sight, whether on the SKS, AK clone or Ruger 10/22 seem to all have positive comments. The aperture and much better sight distance apply to the SKS, if not the other rifles.

You might already know about these, and a few weeks ago they were priced about $75 and higher.
