Sks rust
 

Had this sks in a gun safe for a couple years. When I pulled it out I Found that there was rust in one or two spots. Anybody have some opinions on the best way to deal with the issue I've posted a picture of? Any concerns I need to be aware of? If you guys beed any additional info let mr know. Thanks for your help.

Simle 0000 steel wool an buff it. Done deal oh yea use oil after to give a slight coat that helps alot but the steel wool will make it look like new

Result of not cleaning and lubing properly after shooting corrosive ammo (almost ALL milsurp 7.62x39 is corrosive)

Pull the gas tube, check inside. If all you have is that bit of exterior rust, soak in light oil (Kroil is best, but any light oil will work) Rub lightly- A Choreboy COPPER pot scrubber is best. 0000 steel wool will also work.

Concerned about what the inside looks like......

I used 0000 steel wool dipped in oil and rubbed the rust off my Dad's Marlin. The bluing was gone where the rust was but the rust was gone, too. I left a light coat of oil on it. Next time I go to my Dad's I'll have to check and see how it looks.

Depending on the level of rust, you might try Deisel fuel, its a great solvent, and relatively safe.

Strip off the wood, and such and soak the barrel overnight, then give it a scrub the rust should come right out.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I disassembled the rifle and thoroughly cleaned and oiled it. It was in much better shape than I had anticipated. No rust inside, Minimal corrosion and the floating pin was still clean. The place I stopped for 0000 steel wool was out so I'll pick some up tomorrow with a few more supplies for cleaning and maintenance.

Thanks again for the info. Any tips or tricks you could enlighten me with for sks maintenance and upkeep would be appreciated.

I will post pictures of the rifle and parts once it's looking up to my standards.

If you are shootin MILSURP ammo, consider that is PROBABLY has a corrosive primer. It leaves a residue similar to table salt.

To get rid of that, WASH the bore and gas system after shooting. Hot water, couple of drops of Dawn dish detergent on bore brush. With the exception of M1 Carbine, every round fired in WW 2 was corrosive primed. It is not bad, just needs cleanup after shooting.

Just like it's bp. You forgot to oil after. Lol

Likely this thread is no longer active in such. I own a 12gun stack on locker. And what I do to help moisture control is 1st and obviously is oil to protect and 2nd I use these zerust capsules which last up to 1yr and cover 2ft radios so three capsules in gun locker is well enough protection with any gun and or things you want to not rust.
