In my opinion an SKS is a better SHF gun. And just a better rifle overall. There's really no comparison.

Then again It cost quite a bit more. For what SKS's cost now days, I'd probably just get an AK.

Both are fun range toys. In SHTF the SKS would be more handy. Neither is optimal for SHTF. For bolt guns I'd rather have an Enfield. For semi autos I'd rather have an AR (AK would be another option).

SKS rifles in general are farely smooth running firearms. My is a pleasure to shoot and doesn't do too bad in the accuracy department with cheap eastern bloc surplus. That's what they were designed to shoot and that's what I feed mine. Mosin's are good running rifles too but in any kinda of defensive situation the SKS will prove better.

Between a SKS and a Mosin, I think I'd take the Mosin.

The only reason I'd ever own a SKS was if I lived in a place that banned AK's or detachable magazines. Since I have an AK, I can't think of any real reason why I'd take a SKS over an AK, given the choice.

The SKS is longer and heavier than it needs to be.

The Mosin is still a longer, heavier rifle than a modern bolt-action. However, you can ditch the wood stock for a synthetic stock with better ergonomics.

Between a Remington 700 and a Mosin Nagant, I'd take the Remington every day of the week and twice on Sunday (the day I normally go to the range).

I have both the Mosin Nagant and SKS rifles. They are products of different times in history. If you are in open country, then the Mosin Nagant, hands down as it was built for longer distances. In an urban area, the SKS is the choice even over an M38 or M44 Mosin Nagant.

If the choice is between the Mosin Nagant and the Lee Enfield as suggested above a few posts the Lee Enfield would be my choice.

No disrespect, JonM, but I would never saddle anybody with a crappy AKM, when they could have an SKS, with a milled receiver, for less.
Agreed about the M44, they are a ton of fun to shoot: LOUD, lots of recoil, and 2 feet of flame out the front.

But for SHTF, the SKS wins--a 10-shot semi beats a 5-shot bolt action.
