I'd avoid altering the mag, it tends to make a jamming issue.
I've got a Russian with a lam stock, and a Norinco "para" charcoal synthetic
stock. Two of the most fun rifles I have.
Cutting down the barrel? Why not just get an AK and be done with it?

That's what I said! But older brother doesn't listen to little brother.

IMO, if he's doing a sick build, he really needs to start with
an AK, anyway.
IMHO, SKSs are a lot like Mosins-great, sturdy, simple little rifles,
with only two real bolt-on accessories- the sling, and the bayonet.

The idea proposed in the original post is so crazy it makes me smile. I mean, more power to him if he really wants to spend all that time and money modifying his sks to do exactly what an AK does already the I say let him. I myself would be looking into a tactical style ak so I could mount a front grip, optic, and pick up some very affordable magazines... The cost of the work to a standard SKS to do all the customizing would be so high he could probably invest in a couple aks! I personally spent a few months trying to find a stock sks so I could own a stock sks... When I decide to go tacticool... I will get my AK...

I agree. I have an ak that I want to go tacticool with, as you so eloquently put it. Well, it's actually a Vulcan RPK style with the heavy barrel. The sucker is a little hard to lug around. I should probably have this on a separate thread, but what do you guys think? All I've done so far is put on the muzzle break. I do have a tactical ak stock around here somewhere but haven't tested to see if it fits. Right now it has the wood. Bi pod is factory, so no worries on that. I was going to go for a sniper look but I'm honestly not sure about the quality of the Vulcans. I have heard different opinions on that. I believe the dust cover type scope mount won't fit because of a the bulkier action (?). But I don't like the inaccuracy of those anyway. Everything seems very tight on the gun and groups were good. I couldn't shoot Wolf ammo in it like I can in my romanian ak, but any of the non coated stuff shoots all day.

Werminator's on the right track here.
Why build up to an AK, when you
can start out with the AK, then have a
much more popular bolt-on platform?
