SKS M and SKS D can accept AK mags factory. I've heard less than favorable things reguarding reliability when trying to modify a duckbill SKS to accept AK mags.

If you want an AK, get one... dont try to turn an SKS into one.

I have a few questions that will help me understand your situation:

#1. Why SKS/AK?
#2. What will it be used for?
#3. How much experience do you have with long guns?

Often by asking questions about why someone wants something or how they plan to use it will help us give better info.

There were a few models (M and D) of teh Chinese SKS that already had the magwells re designed to take AK mags.

Trying to get some of the other models to use 30 detachable mags has a history of giving less than predictable reliability. With the availability of AK type rifles, it does not make a lot of sense to modify an SKS to take AK mags. The SKS is most reliable in it's original form. If hunting or participating in any other activity that relies on relaibility and handiness, the standard mag is best. If a more reapid reload, and higher capacity are the main priorities, then an AK is the better tool for the job.

Also if AK features are what you really want, then saving for a little longer will get you the AK instead of spending money on an SKS. Then more money modifying it, then losing money on it when you sell it or trade it to get teh money for the AK you wanted in the first place.

Been there, and done this. Not being argumentative, but possibly saving others the problems some of the more experienced gun owners have already run into.

Buddy all of your posts are complete newb questions and if your gonna get all defensive with someone tryin to help you well I don't think your questions are really worth any of our time. Learn on your own, go turn your sks into an AK..

As several people have mentioned--amidst the bitching sniping and off
topic crap about duckbill mags, the SKS D and M models came from the
factory built to accept the standard AK magazine.

I've had a D model for quite a while. 16", goofy thumbhole stock that
feels and looks like it was hacked from a 2x6 by spastic beavers.
IIRC I paid $106 for it--at a time when NIB Norinco SKS's were going
for $79, $59 if you bought 10.

Pro's. Yup--it takes AK mags. Been 100% reliable through several
thousand rounds of commie ammo. Before I put a perforated metal
upper handguard on it, I could hammer 120 rds or so through it fast,
which would light the wood handguard on fire, and turn the barrel
blueing light gray. Kind of fun when ammo was $60/1000, not so much
fun now.

Con's. Trigger group, stock and I believe bolt are not standard SKS.
If you do break something, you just might be SOL on getting it fixed.
The darned things are getting EXPENSIVE if you can find one. They
only imported them for a short time. Unless you just REALLY GOTTA
HAVE ONE!!!!!!!!! or you find one cheap, you are probably better off
buying some version of the AK.

ETA---I don't remember either D or M model with a bayonet lug. Something
had to go to allow the detachable mag. My D model had the lug ground
off at the factory.

You mentioned putting a preforated metal handguard on the upper handgaurd. how did this affect reliability? Because im thinking about putting on piccanty rail on the upper handguard.

Perforated upper handguard was for comfort--it had no effect on reliability.
Didn't even know they made a upper handguard with a rail for a SKS. Don't
get too carried away with TactiCool stuff-n-junk. I've got half a dozen
"evil black rifles"---and between the bunch of them I have enough rail
to mount 1 light and 1 laser. Even if you decide to go with a AK, all those
poser bells and whistles probably aren't really necessary.

There are a couple companies that make stocks for the SKS that allow for things like rails and the like. I put a TAPCO stock on my M type (takes AK mags) SKS some years ago. It has worked out great.

If it's optics you are looking to get onto a SKS I wish you luck You can put things like Red Dots or reflex sights on them pretty easy wit ha rail on the hand guard. Those spring cover mounts are not usually very reliable as they tend to move a little making keeping them zeroed pretty much a never ending task. Some people set them up with a scout scope type set up. I personally don't like these because I find them not the easiest to look through but I am not everybody. I do have a reflex sight on mine though and it works out great. Being the SKS is not a long range rifle anyway I really don't see the need for a scope to begin with. But having something that allows me to acquire a sight picture quick does come in handy.

(I got a Chinese SKS of some sort...)

And...

?what gets screwed onto the "thread" ed bit on the end of the barrel ?
.
