Hey guys I'm new to the forum but have been apart of gun forums for years. I'm in the process of looking for a saiga 5.45x39 rifle to convert the furniture, add a pistol grip, and mod it to take '74 mags. Anything that you guys can tell me about the conversion process would be of serious help. I'm also wondering if it is needed to move the trigger group forward or if I can just use the modified trigger guard from Carolina arms. Thanks guy!

Have you thought of a 7.62x39 conversion instead? The 5.45 is drying up - but not as fast as the quality mags.

Your money, but the 7.62 makes the better choice at this time.

Really? I knew it was hard to find ammunition but I never thought it was drying up. I originally wanted the 7.62 but always thinking the 5.45 is a much superior cartridge. Idk u may be right but as far as ammo prices go and superiority in accuracy at farther distance I think the 5.45 is the way to go

I have both and did the conversions also. I'm not a handyman by any means, but the conversion is easy. The 7.62 is a beast and the 5.45 is more accurate. 7.62 ammo is way easier to find but three is still 5.45 out there. You just have to look harder to find it. Go to carolinashootersupply.com. Man that is really nice... I got a question for ya...Carolina shooter supple has a modified trigger guard that I think allows you to not have to move the trigger group forward on the rifle. Is that a good option? Or is it mandatory that the trigger group be mover towards the mag housing.

Not sure about that trigger guard, but if I were you I'd move it forward and make it just like its supposed to be. Before I did the conversion I bought the tapco t6 stock, it kept the trigger as it is on the sporter version of the rifle. It was ok, but after the conversion the rifle was balanced and was more comfortable on my shoulder. Just felt better the way its really supposed to be.
