Having it outside in natural sunlight kind of helps get the grain to pop for the picture.

Just a wild-ass suggestion; look for some old-skool Betadyne skin wash that you used to see in hospitals; has an iodine color and makes for a great "Polish Brown".
Just be advised that you do have to thin with alcohol and really rub it out as it is a soap - that stains wood nicely.

Top to bottom - standard WASR pallet wood, middle is Polish Brown via Betadyne and polished with paper coffee filters, bottom is Russian Red'd shellac over basic WASR pallet wood.

Yep, I like that brown. I usually have no problem finding betadyne either.

Thanks. I didn't take before pics. The whole gun was covered in black spray paint, including the wood, but that became the bargaining point to let me get the deal I did on it.

well i took the ak out today with a lorean 75round drum and some us palm 30 rounders. everything ran flawless. ive read a lot about how bad wasr 10/63 are and with open sights i ws getting consistant 1.5 moa which is right inline with my bcm middy with open sights.

ive also read about canted sights and whatnot. mine came with the front sight post drifted all the way to the left. i centered it then shot it at 100yards and with just a scootch of drift had it dead center. you cant tell the sight post isnt dead center of the front sight assembly unless you pulled out a set of calipers and got after it.

had one stoppage at the 3rd round from the end of the drum. prolly the drum's fault. the wife enjoyed shooting it and she wants one and wants it with a purple stain.

its not a gun i would call a lot of fun to shoot as it has a bit of rotational torque but its usable for suppressive fire which is what its designed to do.

overall im happy with it but its no ar15 replacement. ill scope it at some point and do some accuracy testing.

I would say my experiece was similar with my most recent WASR. I had no need to adjust sights. I didn't shoot mine for measured groups yet, but it hit everything I pointed it at from 25 to 100 yds which were mostly 20 oz soda bottles and 2 liter bottles.

I had no noticable cant to the sights or gas block. No failures to feed. fire or eject rounds with two Tapco mags or East German surplus mags. I haven't tried my Chinese drum yet with it. I did try FMJ, soft point, and Hollow point rounds as well as some brass cased ammo.

It didn't seem to miss a beat even with one randomly mixed mag of ammo. I did also notice that the gun would walk diagonally a bit in rapid fire. I'd like to eventually try one of the Effin-A comps that can be tuned to compensate for climb and recoil by adding or removing screws into the holes in the comp.

But, for all the complaining people have done regarding WASRs I have had a few and all have been free of the problems that others complain about. Not to say that I don't beleive there are problem ones out there. I've just been a bit cautious before I buy one.
