Just a wild-ass suggestion; look for some old-skool Betadyne skin wash that you used to see in hospitals; has an iodine color and makes for a great "Polish Brown".
Just be advised that you do have to thin with alcohol and really rub it out as it is a soap - that stains wood nicely.
Top to bottom - standard WASR pallet wood, middle is Polish Brown via Betadyne and polished with paper coffee filters, bottom is Russian Red'd shellac over basic WASR pallet wood.
