My dad gave me an SKS tips?

My dad gave me a pre SKS today. I know he got it before the ban so its at least that old. He has had it for a while and it has never been shot. He has no use for it and is not really into guns so he just gave it to me.
I think its a chinese because if I remember correctly it had a shorter stock but it might be russian.
Any tips? I would like to put a bigger stock on it. Do they make black polymer parts for it? I want to keep it pretty simple, I can tac out my AR. I would entertain the notion of a pistol grip with a retractable stock if that is possible.

Its all possible with an sks except for fixing the balance. look at the markings, they'll tell you what the mfg is. Better yet post some pics so's we can all better tell you what to do with your rifle. ;)

If its Russian, I say keep it in the wood. The norinco's (Chinese) and yugo's get modded alot but the Russian ones are generally keepers as is. Tapco makes a poly retractable stock with a pistol grip.

My personal fav is the ATI folder but the balance has always been a sticking point with me from a pure shooters perspective (too barrel heavy). I personally dont feel its all that great a tactical rifle unless its kept to minimum weight. Keep it iron sights. If you must scope it, get the Choate side mounted receiver rail. Dust cover rails are a joke. They basically place your optic in the path of a slamming bolt.

Anywho, my 2 cents.

pics!

Give us pics!

I want gun porn!
SKS parts are easy to find, I hear TapCo is a good company for it. It is your gun to play with- but I say don't take the 10 round magazine off, if it already hasn't been, and if it has been, get another one. Clips are a million times easier to come by than magazines, a lot cheaper too

I forgot to mention, my dad has a Norinco, and I'm pretty sure you can tell how old it is by adding the first two numbers of the serial number, to 57. Don't quote me on that though!

well you tee'd it up pretty good. someone had to take the shot. Dam its been like 40 mins. How long does it take to shoot and upload pictures? I though them fancy interweb camera phone thingies made it easy.

Maybe he's still playing with himself...
IT. I mean playing with "it" himself!
I remember a while ago when I was learning it, I was taking it apart and I didn't realize the bayonet was spring loaded! I am glad there was no one standing in front of it because it went flying

HAHA. Its not here. Its in the vault at his office. Im going to pick it up tomorrow. I will take a ton of pics for ya though. Warning: my photo skills and camera phone suck so bear with me. I looked up the Tapcos, and they are a lot cheaper than I thought. May go that route. Im gonna wait until you guys take a look at it first. I am taking it out to the range friday if I can find ammo. It has been pretty easy to find in that caliber lately.

Local gun shop is never in short supply of 7.62x39, right now it's $9 a box of 20. I look forward to pictures
