Hey, my buddy sold his AK a good while back but recently gave me his leftover ammo (wolf steel coated 7.62x39, 120gr?). Most of the rounds look fine but a dozen or so have some yellowing (residue?). Are these corroded and unsafe? I haven't used calipers to measure them but they don't seem to be leaking air or grains or have lost any of their shape at all. I figured an AK would shoot anything, but I thought i should be safe and ask.

pics would help alot....are you sure the yellowish residue isnt from the sealer used to seal the bullet and primer?

You're good to go. Wipe the dust off of them and store in a cool, dry place. For what it's worth, all Russian 7.62x39 ammo is steel cased. Wolf is Russian, 123gr, Berdan primed, non-corrosive, non-reloadable. It can have either a laquer or polymer coating on the steel case. If the case is rusty and/or the primer is leaking around the seal it is no good. One recent devolpment from Wolf is their Gold line ammo, it is brass cased, boxer primed and reloadable.

I suggest a leakdown test. Your mechanic should have the appropriate testing equipment. As for losing weight? NEwton says thats not possible due to the Law of Conservation of Matter............

It could be a bit of rust from the steel case oxidizing. As long as it hasn't began pitting the cartridge it'll shoot safely. Just clean it off and carefully analyze it. It sounds like you don't have too much experience with firearms, so you might wanna do some reading up on how to tell if your ammunition is safe. 7.62 is pretty cheap so if you have questionable ammo just go buy some new stuff. I have found that mil-surp wolf may be very mildly corrosive even though it's labeled non-corrosive, so it won't hurt to squirt a few drops of Windex (ammonia) down the bore and in the gas block after shooting.
