Paid $75 for a matching numbers Russian 1954... But that was back in 1996.

The only scope mounts worth having require tapping the port side of the receiver.

SKS receiver covers are too loose to be a stable mount and the gas tube heat shield is not much better.... All SKS gas tubes have some play.

Honestly... Learn to use the iron sights and you can be "point of man" accurate out to 300 meters. No need to scope an SKS IMHO.

Tack

I love the SKS rifles. They are probably the most underrated gun ever. Not much for "tactical" rifles, but they work perfect as semi auto carbines.
Personally, I think the best civilian military-style would be an SKS-D or SKS-M (the ones that take AK mags), with a wood thumb hole or bullpup stock and maybe an ACOG sight. Maybe keep the bayonet (if you like it) and an extra cartridge holder on the stock.

Accessories, well, l well, let's see.

You could get a cleaning kit-ah, no,

it's already built in. Oh, a sling-ah, no,

it already comes with one. How about a

bayonet-ah, that's right it's already

on the rifle. Sorry, no accessories here.

I have the russian and a chinese standard sks. I have a synthetic stock and rifle scope on one the other is stock. Neither one is very accurate. The one with the scope is good for out to fifty yards due to the way the scope mounts. Open sights when properly sighted in are ok out to 100 yards but don't expect either one to be a tack driver. They are just alot of fun to shoot.
