I am also a vet and I respect NM-LEOs feelings and question since each of us have our own quirks as we might call them. It seemed he was just asking our views to see if any of us here felt the same as he. I agree with the other vets there is a distinct sound that an AK 7.62X39 makes compared to other weapons that might remind us of situations. But like most here, I do not blame or hate the weapon. Kalashnikov did a fantastic job on designing a great combat weapon made for only one purpose. It is not my choice over the M-4 or AR platform but since I own one it is one H of a weapon. I just have to respect NM-LEs feelings I have some in other areas but not directed toward the AK. Unless I am sadly mistaken I believe he meant no issue other than to get feedback regarding our opinions and how each of us individualy felt. I would not hesitate to pick one up anytime for defense!
God Bless America!

Thank you for that thoughtful answer!

Been shot at with them, have actually been hit in my body armor by them, I do not own one, but one day I will. I have no hate for them. I know a lot of people do, but I also know a lot of vets who love them BECAUSE of what they've seen them do.

I look at it like this- if your best friend dies in a car accident, will you hate cars? IMHO, that would just be silly.

Been shot at in Vietnam and saw others die, left Nam in a C141 cargo plane with 25 coffins, a very somber flight to Okinawa. Back then I doubt I could have owned a communist gun but now 40 years later I have a Mosin, SKS and AK. A buddy who saw a lot more action than I did can't believe I have them and flat out will not go shooting if I bring one. Of course I respect his wishes but myself, I just see them as tools that can be used for good or bad. Even a Colt 1911 or AR can be used for bad.

And as c3shooter pointed out a lot of Lugers that shed American blood were brought back from the World Wars. I have two of them. One I expect did draw blood, the other is almost unused. Maybe that's another topic, how many of us have guns that likely have killed someone. How many lives did your old Mosin or SKS end? Sobering thought.

The biggest issue with assembling an AR isn't so much getting the parts together right - it's getting the right parts together.

You'll remember the quality of a gun long after you forget how much you paid for it.

The front one was broken, the rear one wasn't bad as that round came in at an almost grazing angle (may have been a ricochet).
