That hasn't been my experience with the situation. Here, the PD will check it with batf IF and only IF the PD has the firearm In Hand, no over-the-phone checks for them. I wondered about that and asked our state attorney general's office if there was a better way to check a firearm's status; they referred me to the batf. Batf basically agreed with the local PD in saying that it had to be part of an "active investigation" yada yada.

Now, BITD, i seem to recall buddies getting somebody at the pawn shop to call the local PD or calling them directly, but that doesn't seem to be the party line nowadays, hence that was a
VERY helpful LEO that ran a # over the phone.
