The Maadi is made in a factory set up by the Russians to the same specs as a Russian AKM. One big exception to that is the finish. The Maadi has a baked enamel finish instead of a parkerized finish.

I have a WASR, and it's very reliable. AKMs, as a general rule, are ridiculously simply built and easy maintain. That's why they work. Are there differences between the WASR 10 and other AKM models? Sure. When dealing with the newer crop of WASR 10s, I don't think the differences warrant the differences in price. Look for one with a Tapco trigger, which all of the newer ones come with, and make sure the front sight is straight up and down, and that's about it with WASR 10s. I personally didn't like my wooden furniture, so I replaced mine with a collapsible buttstock and a quad rail, but with how little I actually paid for the WASR 10, I was still able to do that and come out ahead. I am cheap, but, I like to get as much bang for my buck as I can, and for me, a WASR 10 was a way for me to do that.

A WASR 10/63 that I bought as a bargain, because it was once completely covered end to end in black spray paint.

Thanks I didn't take any before pics. It was just lumpy, runny, caked-on, flat black when I started. Took a few hours with paint stripper and a wire brush to get it all cleaned off. The parkerizing is just fine. Then I sanded and refinished the stock, used some cranberry and red mahogany. Finished it off with wipe-on polyurethane.

That is a nice looking WASR, SSGN_Doc. Don't you love it when a deal like that comes along! A lot of work but worth it to save the money. My WASR is basically stock too. I got it cheap over 6 years ago so it was a ban version. I got rid of the muzzle nut and put on a good flash hider, then sanded the crappy wood, applied tung oil and repeated many times. There's really little else that must be done to get a decent AK.

I have a Maadi that I originally acquired in the mid 90's.
it is a jam o matic and seems to especially hate hollow points. I paid $400 for it and it is in my collection just so I can say I have an AK.

Not a bad excuse to own a gun.
