cheap AK or used SKS

I am thinking if buying a mud gun. Would I be better off buying a cheap AK or Used SKS?

Welcome to FTF. Personally I prefer the sks but its basically a poor man's ak anyway.

Yes....welcome to the forum.

Better off with the AK-47 for plenty of reasons. Just my opinion. I started with an SKS many years ago...graduated to an AK and never looked back. None of them are as cheap as they used to be back in the day.

The SKS has more parts in the gas system. A Piston, and intermediate piston, while the AK has a single connected piston. The intrmediate piston of the SKS helps is a bit with accuracy, but so does the longer sight radius and machined receiver.

The AK (or most AKM clones) are folded sheet metal. It is light, strong, and reliable. It is accurate enough to be combat effective out to 500 meters. It was designed from the begining to be a high capacity rifle.

If one really spends some time and learns to run an AK, it is a very good platform, especially in it's simple form.

Every "gun person" should have and AK in their collection. Gun collectors should have an SKS and an AK. If your are going to run a gun a lot, the AK will be easier to find parts for if it ever does break. There is a reason the Russians replaced the SKS.

I have to respectfully disagree with prior posters.

I have both, and prefer the SKS.

IMO, it may have something to do with shooting style.

The AK cycles rounds downrange faster, but I personally prefer the

machined receiver of an SKS, and the style of stock. I also prefer the more

solid feel, and the balance.

I'd try both, and make up your own mind. They both field strip well.

I own both...

Paid $75.00 for my Russian SKS back in the 90's

Paid $500.00 for my AK about 5 years ago

The SKS IMHO is more accurate and better made.

Tack

I don't disagree with how the SKS is made. It does indeed seem more pleasant to shoot. The Milled redeiver is nice.

The OP said he wanted a "mud gun". I'd go with the AK in the case of a gun intended to be abused.

The AK is cheaper to mass produce and replacement parts will be easier to come by.

If he asked which was the nicer made one, I'd go with the SKS.

Get both..heh.
..Serious..You can get a SKS cheaper and they are pretty accurate. So if it was me I'd lean to the less expensive weapon for what you need it for and if it doesn't suit you then they sell pretty quick and you can get that money back and get an AK. The AK is a bit lighter though. So it's going to be more what you think fill the need best. There's a reason there are so many different guns out there. What I like may not work for you at all. I mean, I have one of those cheap old Century Arms AKs (M70) that I love to shoot and get great groups out of. I loved my WASR 10 too. I don't like most the SKS's other than M or D types (they use AK mags) but many people think I"m really wrong. Because it's hard to find any gun collector that does not have a SKS with the original mag or one or few of those duck bill mags. So pick a coupe up, see what you like. Both will fill the need. But only you will know what will work best for you.

what I was trying to find is a good SHTF gun. I have an ar for my primery, I was trying to find a gun that will survive all the abuse that can be throune at it. I have found a ak47 for 475.00 in good condition and a SKS for 350.00. after reading the posts I think the AK may be the best. I may pick up the SKS later.
