The saiga rifle DOESNT come with the normal ak handguard attatching hardware. The ak utg quad rail needs the ak lower handguard retainer to work. The saiga utg quad rail attatches just like the normal saiga forearm.

IMO for about 125bucks(I know its way more than the utg, but its way lighter and more solid), you can get a bad ass short ak looking quad rail for your saiga rifle that is perfect. Chaos makes them and they are sick. They also use their own mounting hardware, unlike any ak quad rail you try to use on a saiga, which requires a 40dollar saiga specific handguard retainer.

Where can I find a good, inexpensive mount for an optic? I saw one that attaches to the receiver - do those work okay?

I intend on getting myself a saiga in 223. I don't really want to convert it, just want the dragunov style stock it comes with. By not converting it, is it still just as durable and accurate and all that by leaving it in the factory configuration? It seems like a dumb question to me, but I had to ask. My ideal saiga is a 223, dragunov stock, 20 inch barrel, and a nice scope setup. Good choice?

If you have a side mount any of the side mounting ak scoop mounts can fit

It is just as reliable if you are just shooting it for fun if you want it for the future do the full conversion because if you take the gun apart and look in there is a very very small piece of metal that allows the figure to be set back I would not trust it if I needed it to save my life

I have used them in the past but I have never liked them so I do not have optics on and of my ak's
