Default AK74 questions

Okay I am in the market for an AK74. I've been looking at the Saiga 5.45x39 but my question is will it accept high capacity magazines like surplus 30 rounders without modification? If it won't accept them what's another cheapish but still reliable AK74 rifle?

The Saiga will need a mod to take milsurp AK mags. The least expensive semiauto AKs in all calibers are probably the Romanian ones sold by Century Arms. They are popularly known also as WASR. You could mod a Saiga with a roughly $90 all including kit.

Classic Firearms is currently selling several grades of 74's. If you have the $ and a willing dealer to transfer it.

How much would it cost for a gun smith to mod the Saiga?

It can vary, I would call the local shops to get an idea. You can always buy a kit and do it yourself but it would be best if done by a professional.

Yeah I don't wanna screw the rifle up by doing something wrong. All I need is the bullet guide right? What about getting wooden hand guards on it?

Roughly $150 for the full service would be reasonable. Of course shipping may be a hassle or downright PITA depending on where you live. You can get all wood furniture if you like. There's a cottage industry doing Saiga makeovers by now.

Why not just buy an Arsenal that's configured the way you want it?

You can purchase aftermarket laminate like the Russians used from Ironwood Designs if you want a "classic" AK-74 look.

It may not be the cheapest option, but it's pretty certain to yield the best results.

SAIGA hunting rifles don't accept high capacity magazines and require a milling machine to properly enlarge the mag well. I'm not sure what a SAIGA runs these days, but they're not as cheap as they used to be. If you want to run a pistol grip that bumps up the price of the gunsmithing work even more.

30 round mags are standard capacity, not high capacity, no need to feed the MSM fear propoganda.

You're right, the standard capacity magazines for AK's are 30 rounds. My mistake.
