How does the ak74 rate overall compared to the Ak 47 or sks? Is the 5.45 39 more accurate than the 7.62? Thanks guys.

The 5.45 is more accurate land there is an argument about which one has more stopping power. I like the 7.62x39

the AK74 actually has more range then the AK47 because the round is smaller lighter and travels faster. When it impacts a human torso it startes to tumble causing more damage. Really it's the russians answer to our 5.56 and on full auto it's more controllable then the aK47. When it comes to penetration the AK47 will go straight through a cinder block wall where the AK74 might or might not depending on the situation.

Personally I prefer the 7.62x39 ammo is cheap easy to find and knocks the living hell out of what ever it hits.

The AK 74 also has less recoil so it can be held on target when being shoot fast. But the 5.45 surplus is carosive so its going to be harder to clean. Sry 4 the double post .

Another advantage to the 5.45 round is in the weight department. The same number of rounds probably requires 10% less space and adds less weight to your load out than the 7.62... Either one are fun to plink... Either one can and would be lethal... I am in a similiar hunt for my next SHTF gun and I think my plan is to find a gun that fits and appeals to me, then I can worry about what bullets it is designed to throw...

Yes the AK74 round does tumble when it hits a soft target that is why it is called the poison bullet. The 7N6 steel core 5.45x39 will also punch through 1/2 steel at 100yds. I found this out by shooting a the 100yd gong at the range not knowing my scope was off. I was seeing the sparks coming off of the leg but I was thinking it was just bouncing off the gong until I went down range to look at a paper target. There wasn't any holes in my paper but when I looked at the gong I could see all the fresh hits were holes through the leg.
So I don't know about cinder blocks but steel is no problem.

I would prefer the 5.45 by far for a go to gun, if its just for fun then either is good.

Consider both, maybe a Arsenal SGL-31 or Saiga for 5.45 and a WASR or SKS for 7.62x39.

I already have a yugo sks which is y I was wanting to see what the 5.45 is like. I love my sks
