Most gun owners respect the iconic designs and are reluctant to alter them. Most buffer objectors have never tried one. I've never felt the need for it, but if one day I wake up and want a quieter, gentler AK, I'll give the buffer a try. They are very inexpensive.
The "timing", for the lack of a better term, is not precisely calibrated in most AK based rifles. Due to the variations in the gas cycle and pressures, some rifles will probably tolerate the presence of a buffer, while others will short cycle.
