Which AK?
 

I'm going to get an AK, but which one? I have fired an AK before, I can tell you some of the history behind the AK, but I don't know one manufacturer from the next. The 50 cent question is, who makes a good one, cheap? This rifle will be fired little (a few hundred a year) and will spend the rest of it's days locked up. I'm more of an AR guy, I just want an AK also. I have heard that the Polish made guns were the best.

It goes against conventional wisdom, but I always reach for a pistol first. At the end of my last AR training course the instructor asked me what was my favorite part of the class. I thought about lying for a few seconds, then I told the truth, the handgun transition drills:D. All that said, a decent AK could be a good thing, but it won't get shot much. When I need to get mean with a rifle, I reach for my Bushmaster ORC.

I don't understand why so many people prefer the AR to the AK. During my BMT in the Air Force my M16A2 jammed over a dozen times in 40 rounds (To be fair, I acknowledge that Rock River Arms makes. (Both my Bulgarian and old Romanian have devoured any type of ammo I can find. The SLR has a milled receiver and a chrome-lined barrel. There's a video on UTUBE where a humvee rolls over this rifle and it still fires. Don't try that with an M4!

The point is every round has a specific purpose. The .556/.223 is a long-range varmint round, but the 7.62 is a moderate range battle round, available in 154 grain soft-points that leave at 2000 fps. That nearly triples the bullet weight of some AR rounds. Lastly, if you're shooting outside of 200 yards, the most accurate action is a bolt action, and the most accurate sight is the telescopic. I hope this has been informative.

I have a Romanian WASR10. All wood. I'm no pro at the types of AK's available but I hear the one I have is a cheaper one but pretty dang reliable.

I shot approx. 500 rounds thru this weapon and no problems whatsoever. I've been using Wolfe ammo 7.62X39.

At 50 and 100 yards its pretty darn accurate with open sights. I've added a high power flashlight/laser combo and a front grip that opens to a bi pod with the push of a button.

I love this weapon.

Poly-tech is one of the better ones out there, but they aren't cheap, seeing as they cannot be imported anymore.

I agree with Tom the Roofer. I have a WASR and I had the same exact experience but I bought used. I know this is goin sound like a fish story, but I shot my Ak from 45 yards at paper 20 times and when I was done. There was one hole an inch in diameter in the center of bullseye. I swear I have 4 witnesses. I hear when the AK heats up it's not on target. Does anyone know if that's true?
Check out the saigas. I like mine but after market parts are slim.

i got the lettuce and a Chinese dont go the later had more probs with it than the R
both have about 10000 rnds through them and when i go shooting i tend to grab the R

What price range are you trying to keep it in? This will have a big factor on what people will suggest and what you can and want to afford. For the money, the Romanian AK's are a decent buy, at less than $400 for 7.62x39 or 5.45x39. From there, things go up pretty quickly. The Yugos can still be found for less than $450. Up from there, look for a Bulgarian, or a US conversion on a Bulgarian receiver, like those from ARSENAL. These will run you about $600 and up. If you want to spend more, look for a VEPR, from Robinson Armament, but built from receivers and actions from the Molot factory in Russia. These do not look like your typical AK, but quality wise, they are built alot better, more accurate, and will hold up alot longer than most AK's out there. The reason being it is built from basically an RPK receiver, barrel and trunion. All good things. :D , but the costs on these has almost doubled in the past few years. I bought a couple 6 years ago, both cost about $600. Now, they are going for anywhere up to and over a grand. And if money is not object, then look for a real Russian model AK.
