Yeah, let's look carefully at that "AK" for

a moment, too. Scoped, extended bull

barrel, handguard from hell, it looks like

Red Jacket wouldn't know a real AK if

it bit them in the ass.

Am I the only one privy to the knowledge

that .308 doesn't have the best performance

characteristics at 1000 yards?

This project is akin to putting lipstick

on a donkey.

Better than 7.62x39. But agreed not the best 1000 rd choice but can be done. The whole show is gimmicky

Just curious, what would the best choice, all things considered, be for a 1000yd sniper rifle? Inquiring minds want to know. jd45

I know someone who competes in .50bmg 1000 yd shooting comps. He is big into reloading.

Still too many unknowns w/ 7.62x51

How do you get additional velosity from a bullet that has a lower muzzle velosity??
How about you ask all the dead taken by Marine and Army snipers taken at that range. The might tell you different. The Marines look at the 7.62 NATO as a 1000 yrd round.

Many of the magnums which have better

performance at that range are either rimmed,

or belted. Which wouldn't lend them to

satisfactory use in the AK platform, anyway.

My point was, why bother going to all that

trouble, if the performance at that range

is going to be spotty, anyway?

IMO, it all boils down to an idea

which makes a great sound byte,

but with a few minutes of careful consideration

should have been dismissed as a groundless

supposition.

I think he said it was not a "True" 1000 yd sniper round. Meaning there are other rounds that would be better choices and it was not developed for it. 7.62x51 NATO was developed to be an intermediate round for something like an assault rifle, but was a bit overpowered compared to the 7.62x39, the 8mm Kurtz, and the 5.56x45.

A good bunch of the 1000yds shots taken in Viet Nam were with the .30-06. Many of the more modern kills were made with .300 Win Mag, .338 Lapua, and .50 BMG. Lots of shots are actually taken inside 1000 yds, (Pretty sure that the average was right around 600 yds), with the 7.62 NATO round because of the known ballistic limitations (once the round goes trans-sonic as it slows back down it has to come back throught the sound barrier and gets unstable and predictability goes out the window.). Many shots were taken to put combatants out of the fight, and may not be fatal.

Just more to consider.

Just talking out of my ass here.....but if you needed to make a 1000 yard shot on people, money is probably not an issue. Why not just cut to the chase, and go right to 50 BMG? I don't think ANYONE would argue that's not a 1000YD + round......
