overkill0084, just my 2 cents, but I just don't know concerning your reply. Maybe I'm just not up to snuff, as they used to say. No offense. jd45

I believe what you mean is the 7.62x38r (7.62 Nagant) it is used in some old Russian revolvers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62%C3%9738mmR

Or you could mean the 7.62x25, this round was used in auto pistols & several submachine guns.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62x25_Tokarev

The 7.62x39's development was influenced by the German's 7.75×39mm experimental round but until the builders in the US started making AK pistols the 7.62x39 had always been a mid-range rifle round.

In essence, there are many fine Soviet weapons which fire

the 7.62X54R Russian round, which has great range.

If you reload, or get the Boxer-primed American Brass ammo, you

can get the heavier bullet weights which will arguably shoot

well out to 1000 yards.

Much like the venerated 30.06, the 7.62 Russian can be reloaded

to 180,and 190 grain spitzer, and 220 grain round-nosed bullets.

Either an old SVT40, or a Romanian FPK, both shoot the longer

reaching 7.62 X 54R. Also Dragunov or Saiga.

What's the point of re-inventing these guns?

I'd advise getting into reloading, if you're truly

interested in 1000 yards.

Therewolf, ("Where ya goin? I was gonna make expresso!!!) Someone told me when I was exploring building long range loads for my Remington 700
Varmint Synthetic in .308, that up to 200yds, the Spire point had no advantage over a Round Nose, BUT beyond that, you had better choose a SP for pinpoint accuracy to the vitals on a game animal. RNs are adequate for longer distances on man-sized targets in wartime. I'd appreciate your feedback on this

Seems to me that AK47, 1000 yards, and full auto are the phrases that can't co-exist. That's silly.

Long range AK-47? Isn't that's basically a Dragunov/PSL/ect. (In other worlds, it has already been done)

7.62x39mm is a lot like a 30-30. Decent at close range, bad at really long ranges. What they were probably using was a .308 or a 7.62x54R. Those rounds can, and will reach out to 1000 yards.

If you want a long range gun, the AR platform is much better. An AR-10 will really reach out and touch something.

Personally, I'd prefer a bolt gun for those distances.

As has been advised by the others 7.62 X 39 being an effective 1000 yard gun! NOT! The 7.62 X 51 (308)is fair at that range and certainly can do it. I have shot many rounds at 1000. But better yet is the 300 Win Mag or 338 Lapua!
Not saying that the 7.62 X39 could not hit a target at 1000 but it would be like launching a mortar regarding the angle of the trajectory. Otherwise any consistency in accuracy would be a result of luck at that range!
