Default 1000YD AK Sniper Rifle

Does the 7.62X39 cartridge have the power required to give this weapon this capability? The reason I'm asking is that yesterday I saw a re-run of an episode of "Sons of Guns" & they proceeded to build one with a custom barrel & full auto select, but when they range-tested it, they didn't set a target out at 1000yds, IIRC. I may be wrong but I don't see an "intermediate" cartridge like this being able to do it. Can someone enlighten me on the matter? Thanx in advance, jd45

If you see it on Sons of Guns, it's probably not true.

The cartridge is capable of reaching that far and it has accuracy potential if loaded consistently and fired froman accurate enough platform. What it will lack is a lot of reliable lethal performance. Don't have the figures in front of me but. It will be moving pretty slow at that distance, and dropping fast. So it would require a lot of scope elevation. Also projectiles get a little unstable and less repeatable for accuracy as they transition from supersonic speed to sub sonic speed.

There are match rounds based on the 7.62x39,but they have mostly been necked down to use bullets with better ballistic coefficients to overcome those problems and flatten the trajectory and improve accuracy potential. (6mm PPC comes to mind.). This makes better target rounds, but that is not the same as making a better sniper round, because a sniper need a bullet to do more than punch a hole in paper or ring a gong.

The Saiga they used looked like it was the .308 variant by looking at the mags. Also, they never actually said what caliber that rifle was in, just "AK47"

Check out the ballistics on the 7.62x39 you will see it drops like a rock around 300 to 350 yds so I doubt if a 1000 yd shot could be made with any amount of repeatability.

You know, I don't know why I just assumed they'd use the standard chambering for a rifle like that. The 7.62 NATO round would be just the ticket for a 1000yd sniper rifle. Shouldn't be too involved to get it to work in that action, but I'm just guessing. Thanx for the enlightenment, jd45

Think of the x39 as a type of pistol round. The Soviets did!

Now the peope who emptied their $299 bank account on some AK will start making up a defense for their emotional investment, but, ignore them please...

Thread search this topic, which was thoroughly covered, for over a year,

and mercifully closed, only a few weeks ago...

...I believe the exact name of the thread was

"Red Jacket's 1000 Yard AK".

Bottom line:
1.- Rifle isn't accurate enough for 300, let alone 1000 yards.

2.-Round is intermediate, designed for max effective range of 400 yards.

3. Once you change the caliber of the round, for which the

rifle was initially designed, and you change the design of

the rifle to accurately shoot 1000 yards, you now have

a new design, which doesn't meet initial specs, as an

AK47.
