Well, any price guide BOOK tells you what a gun sold for THE YEAR BEFORE THE BOOK WAS PRINTED.

Usually what I will do is go over to Gunbroker, log in, search for CLOSED sales, put in the search terms, and look for the guns of that type that actually sold. And look at the pics to see how condition compares to one I am looking at.

As suggested, check Gunbroker, determine how much you will pay for an acceptable condition firearm and make your offer, final decision is yours. Is $850 reasonable for a nice HP? Depends on the firearm, when made, history etc. only you will be able to determine that. High powers sell for a lot more and a lot less than $850.

There's no way I'd pay that much for anything with pitting.

a few years ago I paid $800.00 <> for a 1984 HP no box, two mags but it was unfired, not a mark on it and the best trigger I have ever felt, took the mag safety off and back on, the trigger got less than 3lb pull <>.

Danf,

IMO that is a little too much for a BHP that has a bad finish or any pitting.
Here is one for sale on Guns International for $799.00 in excellent condition. Here is a picture of it and it is in great condition.
