Default Winchester 32/40

My brother-in-law wants to shoot a Winchester 32/40 that he inherited from his father. He asked me where to get ammo and/or brass and bullets. I've looked around and supplies seem scarce. Will another more contemporary cartridge work in place of the 32/40? Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.

thank you,
Mark
