Default Winchester 100?

Seen quite a few 308 cal. model 100's at fire sale prices.

I seem to remember a few old timers who loved their 88's and 100's in the light brush and corn row's but I've never handled or shot one afield.

Can anyone school me on the positives and negatives?

I have a 100 in 243. I would love to find a 88 to match.
None are at fire sale prices in my area, $500 is where they start in very used condition
The only negative I know is the 100's had a firing pin issue that was resolved

The only other issue is finding magazines at affordable prices.

The M100 had a recall because there was a problem w/ the firing pin. The pin could possibly break and protrude causing a slam fire when the bolt was closed on a live round. To see if yours has been replaced see if the pin will rotate in the bolt. If it will, it needs to be replaced. The new pins have a milled flat that will not allow it to turn in the bolt. Don't know if Winchester is still honoring the recall, but they should. Contact them.

You WILL want to take the rifle down and clean the gas piston/cylinder after shooting. IF you don't, and it rusts, you cannot draw back bolt. If you cannot draw back bolt, you cannot remove action from stock to clean.

Bit of Catch 22 there, huh?

Here's mine in .308. This one now wears a limbsaver pad- and you WILL want a pad.

I have the win. 100 semi auto in 308. I bought it new back in the late early 70's. It has always been a great rifle. Killed a lot of deer with it. Last year I contacted winchester about the firing pin thing, gave him the serial number. I mailed win. my old pin and they sent me a new type of firing pin which I installed. Mine is still in beautiful condition. My guns will be passed down to my grandsons.
