The US Gov'r would not allow a returning GI to bring back an NFA item that belonged to the US Military. That leads me to believe that it was brought back illegally, and therefore never registered.

I believe there are only 6 legally registered M14s in civilian hands (Hawk may remember better), so the odds that this is one are slim. After May 19, 1986 it was impossible to register any new select fire/full auto firearms. There was a brief amnesty period in 1968 that granted people the chance to register war trophies and such, but I don't think there has been one since.

Plenty of M14s came home in pieces, but none are legal.

So, you should run because the M21 in question is almost assuredly not legal. In the event it IS registered and legal, buy it. You may never get another opportunity.

I know he took it of from a dead vc. Also the paperwork I mentioned has bout four different places I remember seeing that says things like trophy legality.....yes. I have also ran the serial numbers through the ATF branch in jeff city, just waiting on comformation of authenticity of it being legal. The m21 in question also has been modified by my buddy to be strictly semi auto with a safe/fire selector. If it is legal though I think it will be well worth the $400 he is asking for it

Still sounds a bit suspect. A recaptured M21 would still qualify as USGI property.

And the ATF has a policy. "Once a machine gun, always a machine gun." Making and M14 permanently semi auto does not circumvent that rule.

But if he wants $400 for it, strip off the oprod, bolt, stock, scope, mount, trigger group, barrel, sights, and stock. Only the actual receiver is illegal. The parts I mention are worth much more than the $400 he is asking for.
