Default Who makes a good, reliable.

Who makes a good reliable bolt action rifle in a 308? I'm looking to get a 308. So what is a good rifle/scope combination for a decent price? My budget is about 800

You can go with a savage axis and a freaking ass ton of ammo. It's good, it's reliable, it's accurate, and it's a bargain. Is it the nicest? Flashiest? No, but it gets the job done.

The .308 Winchester is very popular, just about every manufacturer chambers something good and reliable in .308.

Another inexpensive rifle is the Ruger American. - I have one in .308 and have no complaints. A Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 sits on top, does a good job too. - This is another combo that would leave you with some money left over for ammo, assuming that you can find any.

Also look into the marlin x7 series, many on the forum have recommended them. If you have a bigger budget, take a look at the Remington 700.

the Savage Axis as suggested is a good reliable rifle. inexpensive, decently accurate and well made.

the Marlin XS7 in 308 is a great rifle, inexpensive, very accurate and very well made.

the Stevens M200 is another good option to consider.

the Mossberg ATR100 is another good option to check into.

been hearing nothing but good reviews on the Ruger American, so it should be considered checking out as well.

up the price a bit, check out the Remington M700 SPS,

or the Howa 1500 or the Weatherby Vangaurd, both the same rifle, different stocks.

At the local Wal-Mart they have a savage axis in 308, for $277.

What do you guys think about a scope? I want a scope that is variable as well as having turrets on my elevation and windage with mildots on the hairs.

Alpine, some good advice here. It really is a buyer's market in what you're looking for. Like pistols. There really has never been so much quality available at so low a price and, with the .30-06, the .308 is still the most popular overall medium/big-game chambering.

really depends on your budget. there are probably hundreds of scopes that fit that criteria, from one end of the price spectrum to the other.
