Our longest local rifle range goes to just over 600. It has nice wide lanes and concrete benches. Paper targets to 200, plates from 200 to 600.
We have a couple of places in the Mojave desert where 2,000+ is available. I shoot mostly M14 variants in 7.62x51 and bolts in .300Win Mag so try to stay at 1,000. They had us shooting at 1,200 once but 7.62x51 is panting pretty hard once it hits 900. At 1,000 a 168 or 175 gr SMK from an M14 doesn't even barely chip the krylon paint off the plate.
Here is a shot of 1,000. The 1,000 mark is about 2/3 up the side of the hill off in the distance to the left of the road. There are 3 sets of plates in this pic. 400, 750 and 1,000. Lots of fun when the wind is cooperating.

Here is what the 400 & 750 plate look like. 1,000 is two of these connected. Plates are about 6.5"x13.5" if I remember right. Just about head and neck sized.
