I have taken 6 shots total at 600 yard on 4 different occasions; I didn't hit what I was aiming for but the furthest from center was 11 inches. That was with my Howa 30-06.

The longest shot I have taken and hit, was

550 yards at a 3 inch triangle

Our longest local rifle range goes to just over 600. It has nice wide lanes and concrete benches. Paper targets to 200, plates from 200 to 600.

We have a couple of places in the Mojave desert where 2,000+ is available. I shoot mostly M14 variants in 7.62x51 and bolts in .300Win Mag so try to stay at 1,000. They had us shooting at 1,200 once but 7.62x51 is panting pretty hard once it hits 900. At 1,000 a 168 or 175 gr SMK from an M14 doesn't even barely chip the krylon paint off the plate.

Here is a shot of 1,000. The 1,000 mark is about 2/3 up the side of the hill off in the distance to the left of the road. There are 3 sets of plates in this pic. 400, 750 and 1,000. Lots of fun when the wind is cooperating.

Here is what the 400 & 750 plate look like. 1,000 is two of these connected. Plates are about 6.5"x13.5" if I remember right. Just about head and neck sized.

I'll play this game....longest shots I've taken were in the Marines. 500yds and yes I can hit you 10 out of 10 times with an iron sighted A2.

You guys that shoot iron sights. I don't see how you do it. If i shooting past 100yards im gonna need a scope. But i have never tried to shoot past that with open sights. All my rifles except the mosin have scopes.


Where i live the longest shot i got is right around 300 yards if your lucky. To many woods and hills.

I've done some 1000 yard matches years ago. We used our air national guard M1's, no scopes. The target was 12' square with a 3' bullseye.
Had alot better eyesight back then, early 80's.

300 yards +/- on a skunk I could not measure exactly because I did not want to get too close to the spray afterwards. Rifle - Rem 700 ADL .25-06 120 gr BTHP.

+1, but at 400m for me.

Terrain here makes anything past 100m kinda pointless.

700 yards. 400 is much more fun. I really want to try my M41b and PU 91/30 at 800 meters (875 yards).

Longest shot I have taken was with my .308 Winchester when it had a 28" tapered bull barrel. It was exactly 800 yards and I was shooting exactly at the styrofoam head of a department store mannequin sitting about 2 feet off the ground on a big cardboard box.

The longest shot I actually recorded a hit on was that same, untouched , mannequin head about an hour later at 600 yards and the third shot struck low in the cheek on the victim's right side. That would have been a kill shot.

Long range shooting is NOT as easy as people think it is.
