An SKS or AK shoots an intermediate rifle round-7.62 X 39,

they're semi -auto,which soaks up recoil,

and the ammo's cheap...(@.20 to .25 $ in bulk)

I would say anything between a .243, .308, and if you put a good recoil pad on it, a 30-06. the .30 cal range will probably be all he could manage unless he is built like a brick house. Once you start going up towards the upper 30s and 40s, the guns start kicking pretty hard.

I would go with a bolt action rifle for a first rifle. Remington model 700, Remington Model seven, Browning a bolt, Browning x bolt, Winchester model 70, Savage 110, Marlin XL7, and Marlin XS7 are just a few of the many really good rifles.

If we're talking about largest caliber then it doesn't get much larger than a Brown Bess .75 caliber muzzleloader.
