IMHO, if there was a "best" for all people and situations, there would

only be 1 type and caliber rifle. Caliber and style rifle is all personal.

I'm sure there are people out there who can get 10 times the performance out

of half the rifle I've got.

Very enlightening words. This really cleared up a lot of questions for me. I thank you and will be recommending this thread to many people.

Its not caliber find a good bullet grain say. 300 is good for big game. .243 is good for deer.

I just purchased a Howa 308 with the Axiom stock and Nikko Sterling 4x16x44 scope. Sounds like you may be a fan. Have'nt shot it yet but am hoping for 1MOA groups.

Default best rifle

having been a professional deer culler and on venison recovery here in NZ years ago and on the venison recovery shooting from choppers we used 308 slr's and for my culling Iused a 243 and I still use a 243 today for my deer hunting although I also use a 22-250 sometimes. I think the best Rifle caliber is the one you can shoot the straightest with. Noise and recoil can affect a hunter who has too big a caliber for them to handle. this has been the ruin of some who could have been top shots. this is just my to bobs worth

I have a Howa 1500 chambered in .308 and love it to death. You should have 1/2 moa right out of the box once sighted in

What did you do for your barrel break in? Howa has some really stringent guidelines.
