This is literally the hardest gun question ever.

What rifle is best? ...hmm...well..what are you gonna do with it? What do you need it for?

What caliber? ...hmm...well..what are you gonna shoot??

The most general caliber, as far as I'm concerned, is .30-06. You can hunt pretty much ANY medium-large game animal on the planet with it.

As far as a rifle goes, the sky is the limit. Maybe a Savage, or CZ, or Tikka?

Too hard to answer I think.

The 300 Win mag. is noticeably heavier but not all that much its certainly manageable. I suppose its all in what your accustomed to. My first ever shot-gun was an old Stevens probably around five pounds and the thought of buying anything but "express" loads or at that time Remington offered what they termed "Baby 2 3/4 magnum" loads was inconceivable! I still have it the stock has a lot of drop and its guaranteed to slap you in the yap on every shot.
My Dad offered it to me with the condition "if you can shoot it you can have it"! Gee thanks Dad!

The best rifle is undoubtedly the M-1 Garand . It says so in the DVD, "America's Rifle-The M-1 Garand " from the Garand Collectors Association . If you want to order the DVD, it is 15 bucks including shipping . I enjoyed it ! www.thegca.org

Get real. There is no definitive answer to this question as stated.

As stated previously, what's it being used for, i.e. hunting, target, what? And then, what are you hunting? Small game, big game, people?
The M-1 Garand is a very fine battle rifle. Probably one of the best in the world. I have 2 of them - one scoped, one not. I have a .308 Norma Magnum, the precursor to the 300 Winchester mag. (Virtually the same ballistics). With reloading, I can load it down to .308 specs, or up it to full magnum, thereby taking any game on the North American continent. (Wouldn't fare that well against an elephant.)

I like the M1A1. I also like the L1A1. I like the AR-15 platform and the Ruger Mini-14.

Best rifle/caliber? *Shrugs* No real answer to that one.

Default No answere but some pictures of a few of my suggestion !

I kind of round it down to the most popular calibers = NOW !
That would be 223 & 308 .

Using that as my premise: The scar family especially the scar 17 in 308 although I shoot the 16 more.
The TAVOR bull pup, the AR15 family, Steyr AUGS and clones, FN FS2000 & FALS, M1As AK 47 & 74s, etc.

So much BS. .30-06 for large game, really? All of these posts fail in every respect except for kryptars opening sentence. So, What does come close to perfection? See above. I would prefer an older cartridge for large game. I am a recoil junkie, but why when it is not necessary!

After reading this thread for a spell, it depends where your at. When I received a Stevens single shot .22 and was 9 or 10 years old, I would have told you that was the best of the best. When I inherited my grandpa's Savage 99 in .300 Savage, I was on the top of the world. Hunting elk in open country, the .300 Winchester magnum is mighty fine. For some serious plinking, I'm pretty happy with a Remington 513 T (made in 1946). For cans and small game Ruger's 77 - 22 is nice. Walking through the thick stuff back home chasin' whitetails, a Winchester 94 in .30-30 (30 WCF) sure carries nice. No, you can't have my .270; it's for mule deer and antelope. If your at the gun counter at Cabela's or Gander Mountain wouldn't a .25-06 be nice to bring home?
See, it just depends where yur at!

For a good all around rifle, Remington 700 or browning xbolt in 7mm rem mag. Rifle will do everything, other than work as a good brush gun. But still both rifles are no where near too heavy, I'd carry it through brush considering I carry my 700 in 308 thru brush and it has a bull barrel on it
