many, many years ago i hunted my first deer with my father's M70 in 243 and his handloads. the rifle was extremely accurate and was also the first centerfire rifle i ever shot. i took my first several deer with that rifle. our farm that we built deer stands on, at he most had a clear, little less than 200 yard shot for the longest shot available to us. some of the other stands were less than 100 yards for the longest shot available. the fartherest shot i ever took a deer was a little over 125 yards with that rifle and the most any deer ever went was about 10-15 yards before dropping. the key to using a 243 is using proper bullets, proper shot placement and reasonable distances. growing up and shooting with my father and with him reloading for that rifle, my father, brother and i all shot that rifle quite a bit. dad reloaded from 85-100 gr bullets for us to deer hunt with in that rifle. dad didn't hunt at all and only target shot that rifle and many times he used 55-70 gr. bullets to reach out to well over 400 yards and sometimes even 500 yards with some really good results. now i don't hunt anymore and haven't in many years now and just really target shoot my rifles, but last year i got that M70 of dads out and cleaned it up and mounted a new scope on it and shot quite few rounds through it and got some really impressive groups. yes, i would still hunt with a 243 using proper bullets and shooting at reasonable ranges of 250 yards or less. the 243 can get the job done if you do yours.

The 308 these days is a very good round and can take down majority of small to medium game animals in north america. The performance of the 308 is very similar to the 30-06 with just slightly less power. But that margin will be very hard to notice.

"Overkill" When regular dead just aint good enough?

I've killed many animals with the .300 Win Mag and I have yet to experience this "overkill" so many talk about....

You never shot a 60lbs coastal deer with that 300 WM have you LOL! My 30-06 has left them a limp sack of broken bones and jello meat, I used to always joke about having to scrape the ground venison off the trees well that has not been funny since moving back to the coast. I leave my 06 at home now and hunt with my Swede or 7mm-08.

My personal favoiatr is the TC venture in 7mm08 shoot sub moa low recoil and the gun can be bought for around 500. You can also get get in the predator model that is in max 1camo or snow camp for a few mor dollars and has fluted barrel. Both cone with the 5R rifling my 12 and 8 year old sons both shoot this gun with no problems.

**** EDITED **** Try offering information without condescension. People listen more that way.

The AR-15, in 223, with a 60 gr Nosler Partition will take deer every bit as 'well" as the 30-30 ever did, and it will be 10x as good a gun in a fight, if you add a sound suppressor, night sights, drop in triggerjob, etc, and practice speed work with an electronic shooting timer, steel "gong" targets and the .22lr conversion unit. The AR is many times a better varmint rifle, and you just aint going to be using a deer gun much, the rest of the year. you certainly won't be winning any matches with the 30-30, and probably not with the bolt action, either. Wait a bit, when the AR's again become available, in good used condition, for $600 or so, you can have a MUCH more versatile rifle than any bolt or lever action, regardless of caliber in the latter action types.

I dunno, I like my 30/06 for a lot of things. sometimes it is "too much gun", but that is better than not enough IMO. I actually have shot coastal deer with 30/06 and not had any waste to speak of. Wait for the right shot. I have never used .223/5.56 for hunting. not even once. Doesn't mean it wouldn't work though. I figure that for most everything I can conceive of using a gun for a bolt action in any caliber would be better for me. As Wyatt Earp was rep"Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything." The thing is that if you look at history, particularly the time when police started packing semi-autos with large capacity magazines, it was when the "spray and pray" method was born. These days that is all you hear about really. Not too many times do you hear about a cop stopping a perp with one well-placed shot. it is always "800 shots were fired, 50 innocent bystanders were hit by gunfire and it is unclear if the perp was armed or not." (OK, that is a gross exaggeration, but you get the idea).

I prefer the .308 to the 30-06 but I've always told people if you only plan on owning one hunting rifle go with the 30-06.

Granted it depends what your hunting, but for most medium and larger game .30-06 is plenty of gun. .30-06 ammo is very versatile and can be applicable across many different species of game.
