My roomate uses a 5.56, with great results.

I used a 30-06 this season for the first time... uh... lol, a little overkill in my opinion.

Destroyed 3 ribs on the entrance, zipped open the stomach, and blew the right shoulder into mush...
I took the shot as he was quartering away, hence the trajectory. A broadside double lung would have been better, but hey, in thick brush, you take what you can.

Most everyone I know uses a .270... seems like a good cartridge...

The 270 will do every bit as much damage as your 06 did on those kind of shots like u had. But yes it is a great choice .

A good Marlin 336 in .30-30 or.35 Rem for the thick woods. A good bolt gun in .30-06 for the open shots.

White Tail deer have fallen to rock tipped arrows and round balls. They have fallen to Bird shot and Buck shot. Bolt actions and Lever actions. But really does any hunting expert know what is best?

I will step out on a limb an agree with you as well, no one really knows whats the ( best ) but we all know which caliber WE THINK IS THE BEST. Im still sold on the ( best ) is the one you shoot the best an is a proper caliber for big game .243 & up.
