Historically the most popular hunting round and rifle is a lever action .30-.30 such as a henry or marlin or if you prefer a winchester.i'm not saying that they are the absolute greatest rifle in the world but they are however the most popular by far of any deer rifle in the southeastern US and there are more hunters per capita in the southeastern US .So really it depends on what type of terrain you hunt.also your personal preference asto weight, kick, balance, range etc. in the south we don't make very many shots at a distance of more than 20 yards mostly because the aren't many places you can hunt and have much more than that without your round hitting a tree or the side of a hill or whatever.out west places like TX,AZ,UT,NM where you have mile aft mile of open flat ground then maybe something like a 300 winmag bolt action rifle or some other sniper like specialty gun.there really is no "ultimate universal deer rifle" so whatever you find is the most popular rifle in your neighborhood there is probably a reason for it.So everyone out there good luck and good hunting

25-06 to below 30-06 would be superb for whitetail IMO.
a .270win or 7mm08 would be my choice!
