I won't say it is the best rifle for whitetail deer, but here is my setup. It is a NEF Handi Rifle in .30-06 with a 3-9x40 scope. I shoot a 150 grain Remington Corelokt. The rifle is relatively inexpensive and is ambidextress (SIC?). There is an extension that goes on the hammer to make cocking with a scope easy. It can go right or left.
I read a lot of bad press for the Remington Corelokt, but I have fired my '06 nine times at deer at ranges from 25 to 125 yards and have put nine deer on the ground. Some dropped in their tracks, some ran but none more than a hundred yards. Those that ran left an easy to follow blood trail. And most of those times I didn't have to follow the blood trail, I could see where they fell.
(Luke 11:21 KJV) When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
(Luke 22:36 KJV) Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
