20" too long for stand hunting??
Sounds like improper stand prep...
treat your stand like a bowhunter would...
cut branches where needed in the shooting lanes and replace them on the backside of your stand...
prevents exposing yourself to the deer by having cover behind you...

I usually stalk with a rifle...favorite for small critters is an old Marlin 37 w/ 24" barrel, which is great for squirrel/rabbit/etc...
being 6'3 tall, I have to scramble a bit in the brush anyway...so a long barrel is no big deal...
the Big Critter favorite is a Marlin 336RC w/ a 20" barrel...no issues there either

Big Shrek, it wasn't my stand.

JTJ, I don't see a reason to get the 6.8. I understand that ballistically it's better than the x39, but for 1-150 yards, I don't see the difference being enough to take or lose an animal. If I need to go bigger, then a Grendel, 243 or 260 will be next in line, but currently no where to "stretch it's legs".

I would look for something larger than a 7.62x39 for deer hunting. I hunted for two seasons with an SKS I never had to get a dog to find deer I had shot so many times in my life. I made good shots that if I had been shooting a 30/06 or a shotgun slug the deer would have been right there. One deer I shot managed to run 150 yards after being hit four times in the heart with an SKS. I had to get a friends oldest beagles that would lick blood off the ground to stay on the trail to find the deer. A lesser dog would not have found the deer because I had destroyed the scent trail with my initial efforts to find the deer.

I was considering a reliable cartridge available in a 16" barrel for an AR. I use the 7.62x39 in a Mini 30.

Old crow my other choice is a bolt or ar10 in 243 or 260. Maybe a grendel. But it seems that I can get an ar10 for just a little more than a Grendel upper alone.
