I'm new to shooting and want to know how to properly transport a rifle and ammo in California

Personally, I would call the local police department or the Department of Justice. Here in Illinois it should be in the trunk of a car, unloaded. If it is a van sort of vehicle that does not have a separate trunk, then it must be unloaded and in a locked case. But I have no idea at all what the law is in Cali.
