Thoughts on the 8mm mauser cartridge
I have a VZ 24 in 8mm Mauser. Who has experience with this rifle and/or round? How is it for distance?

The 8x57 or 8mm Mauser is a great round. One of the world's great cartridges. Anything the .30-06 will do, the 8x57 will do; be it accuracy, distance, or power. In fact, with the heavier bullets, the 8x57 will perform even better than the old '06. The Vz 24 is a nice rifle also. I have three 8x57's and will probably acquire a few more.

Thanks. Im planning on using it for deer and bear. Can you recommend any specific rounds for it?

Any soft point hunting round. Federal Power Shok 170 gr is one of the good ones. Adequate for deer/ bear/ elk at what range you can hold all shots on a 5 inch paper plate. Rifle you mention will be heavier to carry than a civilian sporting rifle, but a good one.

Having used the 8x57 for a number of deer, I have nothing but praise for the round. As stated above, use a soft point round. I like Privi, Wolf gold and SB. The european rounds are loaded to the normal 8mm working pressures. With american brand rounds, they are loaded to around the 30-30 pressures because of possible legal issues if the round is shot in a mauser that has the older .318 bore. Use it with confidence.

Especially if you handload, the 8X57 is one of the all time greats.:)

I plan on reloading it. Its one of my favorite pastimes next to shooting. Lol. Any favorite loads? Thanks everybody for the feedback. Im looking forward to using it during bear and deer season.

You can get lots of data from the Hodgdon web site. The most accurate load in my 8x57 Husky is the Nosler 180 grain BT with CFE223 powder. See the Hodgdon data for charges. I believe this load moves out at around 2700fps. That load will flatten any deer or black bear you may see.

I remember hearing that American made 8mm ammo is underloaded compared to European made ammo, but it probably won't make much difference.

My k98 8mm Mauser is every ones favorite rifle in my house. Its the first one the wife and kids fights over to shoot first. And the only gun the kids will actually spend their own money buying bullets for.
