DefaultTarget Rifle options

i've been thinking about getting a dedicated target rifle for sometime now.

i have a 30-06 and two .22's

30-06 is obviously too big for what i'm looking for.

and i like how cheap the .22's are to shoot.

I really want a bolt action, would a .22 Mag or .17HMR be acceptable for punching paper at say 200-300 yards?

the extent of my target shooting is just excessive plinking at tin cans and other things i find laying around

i have plans of putting a nice scope on it, and probably a bi-pod.

any recommendations?

TIA

Either one is fair at target though I think the .17 HMR is a tad bit better at 300 yards if the wind is not blowing.

i'm considering a .223 or .308

.223 sounds appealing since i am putting together my own AR build in the future and plan on using a .223, that way i could share ammunition.

.17HMR is accurate to 150 yards as the .22WMR is good to 120yards, With VG accuracy for targets. 300 yards is about max for .223 for true target accuracy.
I bought a CZ527 varminter .223 a couple years ago. Very accurate rifle. Their website shows it as a 1:12 twist, that is a typo. It is a 1:9 twist. I shoot up to 65gr bullets in mine. Standard 55gr are very accurate. I can take woodchucks,
fox and coyotes out to 300 yards easily. A Harris high bi-pod and Sightron SII 6.5-20x42mmAO scope tops it off. I use a Howa .308 HB for long range and serious target work. It also sports a Harris bi-pod and a Sightron SII 3-12x42mmAO scope. Accuracy w/ this rifle is outstanding. 147..168gr are my normal bullet weights w/ this rifle.

The Savage 93 in 17HMR I have is more than adequate for your purposes of "plinking". Shooting it in the desert at 300 yards it will do MOA even with a slight wind. Don't sell it short.

Get a nice .223 and it'll do anything you want it to at 300 yards. 300 yards is stretching it too far for rimfires such as the .22mag and 17HMR.

My christmas present to myself was Savage 12BTCSS in .223 and I am very pleased with it so far. The Accutrigger is a sweet setup.

Red, .223 will do the job nicely, although, (more food for thought) the .204 Ruger is outstanding and re-loadable. This baby hits velocities up 4500 fps.
