Tango-1hole-other rifle guys...
Buying a new Douglas drop in barrel for a Savage action, in .222 Remington. I want to use 40 grain bullets exclusively, but may plink with 45's and 50's now and then. I know the "standard" twist for .222 Rem. is 1-14. How will the 1-14 stabilize the 45's and 50's? I can get the barrel in 1-12 for more versatility, but will that twist have any negative effect the 40's? Thanks.

It should have any affect on the bullets. The only time you will really see a bad affect IE magical exploding bullets. Is when using a fast twist barrel with really light bullets and your trying to make them go to fast.

Either a 1-12 or 1-14 will work good for a 222. Your velocities are such that you can't really push a 40 or 50 gr bullet to fast do to case size.

I think that most 224 caliber barrels are stock twisted for 52 to 55 gr bullets.

I figured the velocities would be around 3000-3300 fps. (using R10X and or H322) so nothing like .220 Swift bullet vaporizing speed. Is there a benefit of using a 1 in 14 over 1 in 12 twist, primarily with 40's, since the velocities will be fairly tame?

I would opt for the 1-12 for a little more versatility. It will work fine with the 40 grainers. If you are planning to use anything over 60gr. on a regular basis, I would go with a 1-10.

Go with 1-12 twist. It'll still be plenty slow enough for 40 gr, but will also stabilize 45-50 gr-not so with the 1-14.

If all you want to shoot is 40gr in that 222 then go with a 15 twist. The 14 will work and so will the 12. But from some hard core accuracy guys I talk to 15 twist will work the best for them 40gr.

If you go with a 15 twist it will be nothing but a 40gr gun or lighter.
