Survey: Best of 5 Rifles
Imagine an exetreme scenario, that the big one has come and gone. Nuclear bombs have fallen, you have survived the blast range, and social order has decayed. You will need a weapon to hunt and defend yourself.

If you could take only one of the following weapons for post world survival, what would you choose? Please explain why. If you have a better weapon in mind, other then what is listed here, please tell me about it after you've answered.

(You have any and all the ammo you could carry, and any optics or magazines you fancy.)

1. Karabiner 98k - 7.92x57mm, Bolt action
2. AK-47 - 7.62x39mm, Select Fire
3. M16 - 5.56x45mm, Select Fire
4. M14 - 7.62x51mm, Select Fire
5. AKS-74U - 5.45x39mm, Select Fire

Thank you for your interest!

Hey there, why don't you stop by the Introductions and give us some information about yourself?

The M14 w/o a doubt.
Not only is it very rugged but it has distance, something that the AK doesn't have. You get the best of both worlds. A durable gun AND an accurate gun.
Its rounds also have stopping power.

My set up would be a tactical flash light, laser sight and a scope.
I would carry four 30 round magazines and one in the gun. That would give me 120 rounds. I wouldn't line nomadic, I would live on a farm. I would raise my food and defend it. When I would go out is when I would have the rifle.
While working the farm I would probably carry a Ruger GP100 revolver. A rifle would just get in the way.
The M14 is also great for hunting.

That is what I would have.

M 14.

no brainer

Ballisticly(sp) superior to other options. Proven excellent long range.

What, no SKS option? :p

A M14 would be great, but it isn't exactly a liteweight if i'm carrying everything i own & living as a nomad. If i were living on foot & had no lasting base of operations, i'd probably want the M16 for less weight to carry (not generally a fan of the AR's). The AK47 would be a close second for being similarly easy to carry & being much easier to maintain on the move. Actually, it would be a toss-up for me between the AK & the M16.

If i had a home/base of operations, an M14 with a decent scope would be great.

A lazer would be neat for the up close stuff with an AK or handgun, but i would need a solar-powered recharging station.

off that list i would pick the ar15 . i would prefer an ar10 in 308(7.62x51), lite profile barrel , flatop with shephard scope .i would have on hand a set of iron sites in case of scope failure . no lites or lasers ,or electric scopes .

308 is a common and good ammo , shephard is a great scope , batteries will not be readily available

I wanted to keep the list simple, and with balanced options. Otherwise I DEFINATELY would have included an SKS. Indeed, it's a good moderation between an m14 and an AK, in a lighter package. The turn off for me though, is the stripper clip loading. XP

M4, BAR 1918, SVT-40, Remminton 700, and bullpup designs were also excluded, because I just wanted specificly to understand your philosophys behind firepower .vs Range/Accuracy, .vs carry weight.

You gave me what I wanted to know though, so thank you!

Uh, that would be the M14. Hello?

My SKS uses 20 round duckbill mags; they swap about as easily as AK mags.

I'm glad you figured out what you wanted to know.

of the choices given, m16 by a hair over the ak47.
