Default Substitute caliber questions

Can you safely shoot .44 Magnum and .44 Special ammo out of a crack barrel .444 Marlin rifle? Would it be the same as firing .38 specials out of a .357 magnum?

Also, can you safely shoot .454 Casulls and .45 Long Colts out of a crack barrel 45-70? On this question, and the one above, I'm trying to get more shooting in, cheaper, with less recoil and noise!!!! Plus, I've already got guns and ammo for the aforementioned smaller calibers.

Thanks,

Steve

Suiggest you check with Marlin- Marlin Firearms - Repairs

But for at least ONE of your questions- the .454 Casull, the answer is NO. SAAMI lists that round in the 45-70 as a dangerous combination. The standard pressure for 45-70 is 28,000, and the .454 is 50,000. See also hand grenades.

I don't know what you mean by "crack barrel". The short answer is I wouldn't recommend it because the longer case is bigger in the case of .444 and the .45-70. Don't try it as the smaller case will likely split when fired in the bigger chamber.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. The calibers in question were .444 Marlin and 45-70. The weapon I was inquiring about is a single shot, breech loading "crack barrel" rifle like H & R's of NEF's Handi-Rifle that is chambered in those two (2) calibers. Rather than utilizing reduced loads in the rifle, I was wondering if the smaller pistol ammo could be used in the rifle if I were also carrying a .44 magnum or 45 long colt handgun.

No. The cases of the shorter handgun ammo are smaller in diameter than the .444 and 45/70. 44 magnum cases have a head diameter of .457 whereas the .444 has a head diameter of .469. The .45 colt has a head diameter of .480 and the 45/70 has a head diameter of .504. So I wouldn't do it.
