Some custom barrel builders go to extreme lengths to make sure their barrels are straight and that the bore is the same throughout its length.

That`s right you said metal trades, crankshafts are made of metal. It`s for straightening the crankshaft on a lawn mower engine. You also said, I've had a bent piece of round stock, and have tried straightening it. Usually, I get it better, but not straight, I can straighten a crankshaft back to as straight as it ever was. I worked in the automotive trade for almost 40 years, everything from the engine to the tires & when working on a frame machine or with body panels (YES) metal does want to return to its original shape.......
