Default Spanish M1916 mauser marked 7.62 - Nato vs 308 win

I recently purchased a Spanish M1916 Mauser with a chamber marked as 7.62. I know these rifles were built n small ring mauser m1893 actions. I have seen several forums where people go back and fourth over the issue. I would like to hear from people who own and shoot M1916 mausers and what they shoot in them - commercial or hand loads. Thanks or any help

I shoot surplus 7.62. I usually get it in 200 rd. battle packs.

Surplus 7.62 NATO ammunition is closer to the chamber pressure of the original 7 X57 caliber of these old Mausers. .308 Win ammunition can exceed the safe pressure in some cases. If you can find the 7.62 NATO stuff, you'll be good to go. .308 Win. may be fine in some guns, but why push it?

7.62 NATO is NOT .308 Winchester. If the rifle is marked 7.62, it would be prudent to stick with that.

Rifles chambered in .308 CAN safely shoot 7.62 NATO, but reverse is not always true.

303- a good article on the differences between 7.62 NATO and .308 Winchester- coincidentally, by another 303.

7.62x51mm NATO or 308 Winchester? What's the Difference?

It is your face so shoot what ever you choose. I have a Spanish FR-8, built on a large ring Mauser action. I shoot 7.62 NATO spec ammo or slightly reduced .308 hand loads. Remember the action/receiver was used when it was rebarreled. The receiver had ? rounds through it before this process. The bolt was tested by who? A small hairline crack can easily lead to a high velocity shard of bolt/firing pin/cocking piece entering your skull via your eye socket so do what you think is best.

I likewise have two 1916 short rifles in 7 X 57. I load them down a bit also. I am pretty fond of my eye sight and would like my brain to stay put with out any additions of magnetic material. I am also fond of my rifles and would prefer they remain servicable long after I am no longer so.

I had one and I shot .308 out of it until my gunsmith told me that sooner or later the receiver would stretch. He said it wouldn't blow up or come apart but it would get increasingly difficult to operate the bolt until it finally locked up.
