Depending on where the OP lives, the AK's larger capacity may not be an advantage. Here in New York semi-auto guns with a detachable magazine are limited to 10 rounds unless the mag was manufactured before the old Assault Weapon Ban went into affect in 1994. Since the SKS doesn't have a detachable mag it's not limited to 10 rounds. (Although there may be a limit while hunting, like for shotguns.)

Can you get hollowpoint or soft nose 7.62x39 ammo? I'm not so sure military ball ammo is appropriate for hunting.

Not to mention a lot of states limit you to 5 rounds when hunting with a semi-automatic; I know Florida does.

If you wanna stick with x39 but wanna hunt with it, how about a bolt gun? I know that both CZ and Ruger make bolt guns chambered in x39, and I'm sure there are others as well.

Ruger® M77® Hawkeye® Compact Bolt-Action Rifle Model 37141

CZ-USA -> CZ 527 Carbine

Just a couple other options.

I was just looking at the Savage Axis. Sounds like out of the box it beats the Remington 700 for accuracy. Certainly a rifle you can easily push to 400 yards accurately and still be delivering more than 1000 ft-lbs with almost any load you can pick up in stores. Cheap too. You could probably find one in a box store for less than $300. Maybe even with a scope.

You mentioned that you were interested in learning about ballistics? Then I agree that you should go for a bolt gun in a major caliber. This will give you a solid test bed for consistency.

I can not speak to the acuracy of the Savage or the Remington 700 becuase I don't own either. But the 770 I just bought was able to shoot 1 inch groups at 200 yards. Pretty nice for $299 with a scope already on it.

It's kind of like a 1911, everyone should have one. I'm working on the 1911 though, I don't have one of those just yet.

Yep, just throwing some competitors out there. And to be clear I'm just going off range reports that I've been able to find online.

If you like milsurp rifles the SKS would be a fine rifle for deer hunting. And so would your AK most likely. I've seen AK's that weren't accurate enough and I've seen SKS's that weren't accurate enough either but for the most part an SKS is more accurate.

You will need to check your local laws about what is legal to use to hunt. In my state (Ohio) you can only hunt deer with a shotgun (with slugs). Across the river in Kentucky rifles are limited to 3 rounds of capacity for hunting. Generally there are devices that can limit the capacity of your rifle.

If you want a good rifle for hunting for not a lot of money you could buy a used
Savage 110 or something similar. I buy from places that give me a warranty of some kind when I buy used guns usually. I bought a used 110 for $225 and it included a decent scope for 100 yard hunting.
