Shooting steel plates, and GONGS!!

I know that in certain situations with certain calibers, shooting plain steel plates is bad. If I plan on shooting steel with a 308, at 66 to 300 or 400 yards, does it continue to matter if I am shooting that 550 alloy steel, or whatever it is? Or would a plain hot rolled piece of steel be ok? Also, what sizes do you guys think for 100, 200, 300, & 400 yards?

Any good sources for that hard alloy steel if needed?

You need the armor steel.

Ok, the shoootsteel site looks good, prices are not as bad as I thought. So what diameter targets would you guys recommend for the distances I mentioned?

Hot rolled steel with woprk for non-AP bullets. You better make it THICK though. THe difference is HUGE. .308 FMJ, hot rolled steel, 100 yards? I would be a little nervous at 3/4"

I would think about 12 inch. That would be large enough for offhand to 300, and kneeling, sitting, prone out to 500.

If you can afford two, a 6 inch would give you good precision practice and 100 yard offhand.

Sounds good, the 6 & 12". I think I'll stick to the hardened steel. Thanks for the replies everybody.....
