I would say m1 garand in 30-06.

But I went scar17 so I could use optics easy

For hunting I would say a Browning BAR or if you want something in a black rifle the FN-AR (google is your friend for pics). Both are based off of the BAR action. I have had a couple BARs and cant say enough good things about them and have heard the same about the FN-AR.

what's your use for this? Looks, accuracy, hunting and/or SHTF?

If you want something to look bad-ass.....get an airsoft rifle and save your $$

If you want a tack driver, get an AR10 bench build with a long heavy barrel and lug that around between ranges.

For hunting, you need lightweight and accurate I'd go +1 on the BAR

For SHTF - I recommend a towel followed by antiseptic bath

My favorite 556 rifle is the Noveske N4 Afghan with ss barrel and monolithic receiver.
My favorite 308 is the H&K MR 762. Followed closely by the SIG 716

LWRC REPR 20". Not cheap but a nail driver. And that is coming from an M1A fan.

Depends. For sports or as a classic, the M1. For walking in the woods or HD, the probably the FNAR, or the Vepr (a little heavier)

It's very hard to beat the BAR for hunting.
